Advia | Member-Owned Credit Union in Michigan & Wisconsin

Advia Credit Union has operated as a member-owned financial cooperative since 1935. What began as a single credit union serving paper mill employees in Kalamazoo now spans 28 branches across southwestern Michigan and eastern Wisconsin. Over 160,000 members trust Advia Credit Union with more than $2 billion in assets.

The cooperative model means members are owners. Every dollar deposited at Advia Credit Union stays in the communities where members live, work and raise families. That structure produces tangible results: lower loan rates, higher savings dividends and fewer fees than the average commercial bank.

The History Behind Advia Credit Union

The story of Advia Credit Union starts in 1935 inside a paper mill on the banks of the Kalamazoo River. A group of employees pooled their savings and formed the Kalamazoo Paper Makers Credit Union, giving workers access to affordable loans during the Great Depression. The founding principle was simple: people helping people through shared financial resources.

Over the following decades, the credit union grew through mergers with other employee-based and community credit unions in the region. Each merger expanded the membership field and added branch locations. By the 2000s, the credit union served members well beyond Kalamazoo County, reaching communities from Benton Harbor on the Lake Michigan shore to Battle Creek in the east and into southeastern Wisconsin.

In 2017, the board of directors approved a name change from Kalamazoo County Credit Union to Advia Credit Union. The new name draws from Latin roots meaning "to guide on the path." The rebrand acknowledged the credit union's expanded geographic footprint and its mission to guide members through every financial decision, from opening a first checking account to financing a home through an Advia Credit Union mortgage.

The Cooperative Difference

Advia Credit Union is not a bank. Banks are for-profit corporations owned by shareholders who expect quarterly earnings growth. Credit unions are not-for-profit cooperatives owned by the people who deposit money and borrow from them. At Advia Credit Union, every member gets one vote in board elections regardless of account balance. A member with $50 in savings has the same voice as a member with $500,000.

This ownership structure changes how the institution operates. Surplus revenue at Advia Credit Union flows back to members through better rates on savings products, lower rates on loans and reduced fees on accounts and services. The NCUA reports that credit union members nationwide save an average of $200 per year compared to bank customers through lower fees and better rates. Advia Credit Union amplifies that advantage with its Free Checking account that carries no monthly maintenance fees and no minimum balance requirement.

Community reinvestment is another tangible benefit. Deposits at Advia Credit Union fund loans to local borrowers: families buying homes in Kalamazoo, small businesses expanding in Racine, students financing education across both states. None of that capital flows to distant shareholders. It stays local.

Branch Network and Access Points

Advia Credit Union operates 28 branch locations. Michigan branches stretch from Benton Harbor and St. Joseph along the lakeshore through Kalamazoo, Portage and Parchment in the center of the state, north to Grand Rapids and east to Battle Creek. Wisconsin locations serve Racine, Kenosha and surrounding communities south of Milwaukee.

Each branch offers full-service banking including account openings, loan applications, notary services, safe deposit boxes, coin counting machines and drive-through lanes. Saturday hours are available at most locations. Members can schedule appointments for mortgage consultations, business banking reviews and investment discussions.

Beyond branches, Advia Credit Union members tap into the CO-OP ATM network for surcharge-free access at more than 30,000 ATMs nationwide. The CO-OP Shared Branch network adds over 5,000 credit union locations where members can make deposits, withdrawals and loan payments as if they were standing in an Advia Credit Union branch. Between physical locations and digital channels, members have access to their money virtually anywhere.

Product and Service Lineup

Advia Credit Union offers a broad product set that competes with the largest regional banks. Personal deposit accounts include Free Checking, Rewards Checking (earning up to 3.00% APY), Premium Checking, regular savings, money market accounts and share certificates with terms from 3 to 60 months. All deposit accounts are federally insured up to $250,000 per member by the NCUA.

Lending products cover auto loans (new and used), personal loans, home equity lines of credit, credit cards, mortgages (conventional, FHA, VA, USDA and jumbo) and student loan refinancing. Rates consistently undercut regional bank competitors, and the credit union offers pre-approval for auto and mortgage loans to streamline the buying process.

Business members access business checking, business savings, commercial loans, lines of credit, merchant processing and treasury management tools. The business division serves sole proprietors, partnerships, LLCs and corporations across both states.

Community Investment

Employee volunteer programs contribute thousands of hours annually to Habitat for Humanity builds, food bank operations, park cleanups and school events across Michigan and Wisconsin. This community involvement reflects the cooperative principle that credit unions exist to serve people, not profits.
